Department of General and Clinical Psychology
General and Clinical Psychology is a special sub-discipline in psychology that integrates psychological knowledge to research, evaluate, prevent, diagnose and treat human abnormalities, disabilities, and mental disorders. Owing to the unique biological, psychological, and social dimensions of human beings, Clinical Psychology is a crucial field that, through integration and application of science, theory, and practice, seeks to understand and predict human behaviour and reduce incompatibilities and anxieties. Clinical psychologists work to promote human adjustment and personal growth, increase human beings' psychological well-being and excellence, and maintain mental health and maturity at the social level.
Department of General and Clinical Psychology is currently admitting students in Bachelors, Masters, and PhD levels. Due to the urgent need for training specialised graduates in the areas of General and Clinical Psychology, the Department has ever since its establishment tried to offer relevant degree programmes to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
To date, there are 9 full-time faculty members teaching and researching in the Department. The faculty members are offering the latest advances in various branches and areas of General and Clinical Psychology. Of the 9 faculty members, 4 members are full professors, 1 member is associate professor, and 4 members are assistant professors.
Moreover, there are currently about 347 students studying in the Department. Since 1993, a total of 1829 students have graduated from the Department. In the 2018-2019 academic year, a total of 87 freshmen were admitted into the Department and 55 students were graduated.
Degree Programmes
The programmes offered in the Department of General and Clinical Psychology are introduced and specified below.
Bachelors Degree Programme
- Psychology: The bachelor's degree programme in Psychology started to admit students in 1984. The programme is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 4 years, 8 semesters.
Masters Degree Programmes
- General Psychology: The master's degree programme in General Psychology started to admit students in 1988. The programme is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 2 years, 4 semesters. After passing the taught courses, students have to prepare and defend a masters dissertation to receive their degrees.
- Clinical Psychology: The master's degree programme in Clinical Psychology started to admit students in 2005. The programme is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 2 years, 4 semesters. After passing the taught courses, students have to prepare and defend a masters dissertation to receive their degrees.
- Industrial-Organizational Psychology: The master's degree programme in Industrial-Organizational Psychology (also known as the I/O Psychology) started to admit students in 2016. The programme is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 2 years, 4 semesters. After passing the taught courses, students have to prepare and defend a masters dissertation to receive their degrees.
PhD Degree Programmes
- Psychology: The PhD degree programme in Psychology started to admit students in 1990. The programme is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 4 years, 8 semesters. Students have to pass 18 taught credits followed by another 18 dissertation credits, 36 credits in total. After passing the 18 taught credits, students have to sit a "comprehensive exam" and receive a minimum mark of 16, out of 20. After the Comprehensive Exam, the PhD candidates are allowed to choose their dissertation titles and prepare their proposals with the help of supervisors and advisors.
- General Psychology: The PhD degree programme in General Psychology is offered at Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 4 years, 8 semesters. The same rules specified above for the PhD Degree Programme in "Psychology" are also applied to this programme.
- Clinical Psychology: The PhD degree programme in Clinical Psychology started to admit students in 2019. The programme is offered in Allameh Tabataba'i University for a period of 4 years, 8 semesters. The same rules specified for the above PhD degree programmes are also applied to this programme.
